10 definitions of Space

This is the one time I will ever admit I think I captured stuff without caring to really overthink the topic. These pictures vary from current to as late as my high school era !

To start off strong I want to present the first picture I took for this project:

“ The Light House “ (2024)

It was two weeks ago when me and my girlies were watching the Light house (with Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe). I think this was after the second it ended. I accidentally clicked night vision mode but ultimately what struck me was the only real light is blurry on the left side from where the tv was. Without night vision everything else was dark. This also reminded me of that liminal space trend so I was double intrigued.

‘Mom needs to pick me up SOON’

I took this at some point in high school and I remember liking the lights against the dark, but looking back at it makes me feel uneasy. This space feels like a guiding threat. My mom used to only be able to pick me up at 6pm from school and unfortunately this was around the time it would get dark around 4 and rain all day.

‘My dream display case’

I remember taking this picture in a house-like antique store. I was fascinated with how much random stuff was in it. Both chaotic but semi organized, it spoke right to me. However with the size and angle of this image it feels a bit claustrophobic to me too.

‘Behind the Entertainment’

For this space I was looking around my room and could not find anything that crazy exciting. That was until I realized, instead of presenting my obviously hyper organized trinkets, I could go even further and give their point of view. (Be so kind at how chaotic and messy my room is, there was no angle to hide this vulnerability about me).

‘ The Dip’

I was making snow angels with some buddies when suddenly I realized that although this area seemed to be flat due to the snow, this illusion would make it super easy to fall down the stairs that lead to a separate path.

‘Just like heaven’

I was walking to my main high school building from the art building when for some reason this cloud was so damn beautiful I just needed a photo. It felt like the mothership arriving on earth to take some of us away. I can't go back to this moment, but with the cloud I want to see how I can maybe reconstruct it somehow for an installation idea.

‘Werewolf conjuring moon’

I took this freshman year of college and I remember my phone at the time had a shattered camera lens so that explains the crazy light reflection, but what it does not explain is how this moon seems to be beckoning the viewer in. I call it the Werewolf conjuring moon because with how big and threatening it feels, I can only assume something supernatural happened that night.

‘Someone spilled blue across the river’

I was trekking to the Fox valley thrift for installation inspo when my friend pointed out that the river was half frozen. It took weak shaking hands and five tries but I finally captured something from it. I didn't realize until I got home and could see my photos that all the stills came out blue. I love the color so much and that these clouds still pop out a bit.

‘The self is an optical illusion’

I took AP Art in my senior year of high school and this was one of my progress pics I had to take for review, but looking back I realized that space, negative or filled was also an interesting definition of space. It looks like very saturated colors around a white square, but unless you zoom in or look really close, you can't tell that white square is a portrait of me as a baby pretending to drive and looking at the camera. I liked this idea for space because although space is usually about the physicality between two objects, I think here I'm expressing something more about the tangible and filled-in-ness of a space.

Do I even exist in this portrait?

‘He’s just standing there…MENACINGLY”

I was on a walk to the public bus stop when I noticed a cute little squirrel running around. As with all cute things I took out my phone to get a picture…however when I saw him away from my phone, he was just prancing around, but the second I looked at my camera, he had this stance of power. I was not this close to the squirrel in person, I was a few feet away, but this was enough for me to high tail it out of there. My mom has always warned me that despite my love for squirrels, any like this one would come at me and that would be it... KO
